Stay Calm — Here's What to Do First
It's a sweltering August afternoon in Central Florida, and your air conditioner suddenly stops working. The house begins heating up within minutes. Before you panic or reach for the phone to call an emergency technician, take a deep breath. Many AC failures have surprisingly simple causes that you can check and resolve yourself in just a few minutes. Others will require professional help — but even then, knowing what to tell the technician will speed up the diagnosis and get your home cool again faster.

Step 1: Check Your Thermostat
This sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how often the culprit is the thermostat. Before anything else, verify:
- Is the thermostat set to Cool, not Heat or Fan Only?
- Is the set temperature lower than the current room temperature? If your thermostat reads 74°F and you have it set to 76°F, the system correctly won't turn on.
- Are the batteries dead? Many digital thermostats run on AA batteries that need replacement every 1–2 years. Replace them and see if the system responds.
- Has someone bumped the settings? Children and guests occasionally change thermostat settings without realizing it.
If everything looks correct on the thermostat, move on to step 2.
Step 2: Check the Circuit Breaker
Your AC system has at least two dedicated breakers — one for the air handler (inside unit) and one for the condenser (outside unit). Go to your main electrical panel and look for any tripped breakers. A tripped breaker will be positioned halfway between On and Off, or fully in the Off position.
To reset a tripped breaker: push it firmly to the Off position first, then back to On. If the breaker trips again immediately, do not reset it a second time. This indicates a serious electrical problem — a short circuit, an overloaded circuit, or a failing component — and requires a licensed HVAC or electrical technician.
If the breaker is fine and the system still isn't running, continue to step 3.
Step 3: Inspect the Air Filter
A severely clogged air filter can starve the system of airflow to the point that the evaporator coil freezes solid. A frozen coil causes the AC to stop cooling effectively and can cause the system to shut down entirely as a safety measure. Check your filter by pulling it out of the return air vent or air handler cabinet.
If the filter is gray and visibly clogged with dust and debris, replace it immediately. Turn the system off and let it sit for 1–2 hours with the fan running on "Fan Only" mode (no cooling) to thaw any ice that may have formed on the coil. Then restart the system with the new filter in place. If cooling resumes, you've solved the problem.
Step 4: Check the Condensate Drain Line
Florida AC systems produce a significant amount of condensation, which drains away through a condensate line. Most modern air handlers have a float switch in the drain pan that automatically shuts the system off if the drain line becomes clogged and the pan fills with water — this is a safety feature that prevents water damage to your home.
Look at your air handler (usually in a closet, attic, or utility room). If you see standing water in the drain pan, your condensate line is likely clogged. You can attempt to clear it by pouring a cup of distilled white vinegar into the drain access port (a capped PVC pipe near the air handler) or by using a wet-dry vacuum to suction the clog from the outdoor drain line exit. If this resolves the water issue, the safety switch should reset and the system should restart.
Step 5: Check the Outdoor Condenser Unit
Go outside and look at your condenser unit. Is the fan spinning? Is the unit making any sounds? A few things to check:
- The unit isn't running at all: Check the disconnect box mounted on the wall near the unit — it contains a pull-out fuse block. If the fuses have blown, the unit won't run. This usually requires a technician to replace.
- The fan is running but the unit is hot and not cooling: This often indicates a refrigerant issue or compressor problem — call a technician.
- The unit is covered in ice: Ice on the outdoor unit usually means low refrigerant or severely restricted airflow. Turn the system off and call for service.
- Debris, leaves, or grass clippings blocking the unit: Clear any debris from around the unit. The condenser needs adequate airflow on all sides to work properly.
