• System is 9 years old, repair estimate is $700 → 9 × $700 = $6,300. Consider replacement.
• System is 12 years old, repair estimate is $1,200 → 12 × $1,200 = $14,400. Replace.
This rule is a useful starting point, but it's not the only factor. A 7-year-old system with a $900 repair calculates to $6,300 — technically above the threshold — but if the system is otherwise in excellent shape and has had no prior issues, repair may still be the right call. Consider the Age and History of Your System
In Florida, central AC systems typically have a lifespan of 10–15 years — shorter than the 15–20 year average in cooler climates because our systems run far more hours per year. A system at 10 years old in Orlando has likely run the equivalent of 15+ years of wear compared to a northern climate unit.
Age alone isn't disqualifying, but age combined with a pattern of recurring repairs is a strong signal that the system is entering its "terminal decline" phase. If you've had two or three significant repairs in the past three years — a capacitor here, a contactor there, now a refrigerant leak — those costs add up fast. And they tend to accelerate: once one component reaches end-of-life from wear, others are usually not far behind.
Ask yourself: has this system required repairs in consecutive years? If yes, you may be throwing good money after bad. A new system comes with a manufacturer warranty (typically 5–10 years on parts, 1 year on labor, with extended options available) and the peace of mind that comes with equipment that isn't constantly approaching its next breakdown.
Energy Efficiency: The Monthly Bill Calculation
Energy efficiency is one of the most compelling arguments for replacement, especially for homeowners with older systems. HVAC efficiency is measured in SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio). When evaluating repair vs. replacement, factor in your current system's estimated efficiency loss from age (a 12-year-old neglected system might be operating at only 60–70% of its original efficiency) alongside the savings a high-efficiency replacement would deliver.
The R-22 Phaseout: A Special Consideration
If your system was manufactured before 2010, there's an additional factor to consider: refrigerant type. Older systems used R-22 refrigerant (commonly known as Freon), which has been phased out by the EPA under the Clean Air Act due to its ozone-depleting properties. As of January 1, 2020, the production and import of R-22 in the United States was banned.
The practical impact: if your R-22 system develops a refrigerant leak, repairing it requires purchasing recycled or reclaimed R-22, which has become increasingly scarce and expensive — often $100–$150 per pound or more. A system that needs 3–4 pounds of refrigerant to repair a leak can cost $400–$600 in refrigerant alone, on top of the leak repair labor. And because R-22 systems cannot be converted to use the modern replacement refrigerants (R-410A or the newer R-32/R-454B), every leak in an R-22 system brings you closer to the point where replacement is the only economically sensible option.
